Why Earn, Buy & HODL Seeds

With Seeds being minted & Seeds being sold,
there must be a need for the one to hold.

This is a thread for collecting ideas more than one with conclusions.

Right now:

  • Because we’re only getting started, and if you don’t believe we’ll do great things then why are you even here? The current price only reflects the work put in, once all of this value is aggregated into a thing bigger than the sum of its parts, the price should reflect that too.

In the future:

  • Speculation. No, not that kind of speculation. The futarchy kind of speculation. You use Seeds to boost rewards for the Quests & Raids you think will create value for the community. If the community finds them valuable, the value flows back to you.
  • You might need them to actually play the game. We are not going the way of Web2 platforms, selling your attention. That means MetaGame might at some point implement a subscription model where you’d need to either earn Seeds & use them to play, or pay a monthly fee.
  • You need to stake them when entering in a contract with someone.
  • In-game skins & other cosmetics.
  • Skin in the game (land on the octopus)
  • Charging guilds for due dilligence/onboarding/listing
  • Services we’ll be selling such as advising, building or shilling, will be charged in Seeds.

If we go the way of a subscription model, we need to think hard about what exactly would we be offering the players. I strongly believe all educational material & the public square should always stay free. But there are some parts of the community & interface that we can charge access to.

Maybe for the actual playing interface? Access special channels? Your name in the credits?
There’s a lot to learn here from Patreon & rewards people offer to their subscribers (where subscription is voluntary), rather than projects that actually charge for access.
I’d also suggest that the higher rank you are, the more you have to pay.

If we really want the prices of Seeds themself to increase, we probably need some burning mechanisms too.

Burning

  • The money we raise from future grants can at least partially be used to buy Seeds from Uniswap & burn them.
  • When people buy Seed for subscription, that money is used to buy & burn Seeds

Locking & Staking

  • We’ll be doing a lot of content curation & lists of “best books” and what not. Voting things up is locking up Seeds.

Liking the number of directions for monetization being explored. They all make sense, and presumably some will land…tentacles searching :octopus: :money_with_wings:

Personally like and am bullish on Patreon-style subscriptions, but the others could be cool too.

The MAIN burn mechanism for SEED will likely be boosting. You burn SEED to increase the amount of XP that is earned by doing a certain task. Skin in the game staking on the direction / priorities of MetaGame. People who want to influence the game without earning SEED have to buy the SEED from the bonding curve, and then they can boost certain quests etc.

One use case would be people creating quests for stuff that isn’t directly related to MetaGame. e.g. Pepo makes a quest for MG players to make a Pepo video, by default it earns 0 XP, but they can buy and burn SEED to boost their quest so that people who complete it will earn some XP (until the boost runs out and they need to replenish with more SEED to keep the XP reward there).

@peth thanks for starting this thread. It’s really important to think about why SEEDs might be valuable as that drives not only the awesomeness of MetaGame, but also (if we set things up correctly) the price of SEEDs. Strong SEED price = rewards for contributors.

There’s an inherent trade-off between “in-game” XP and on-chain SEEDs. Within the XP system we will (in 3-6 months) have boosting and quests and fast game-play mechanics. That being said, the XP system is inherently a centralized platform with rules as to what you can and can’t do, and what will and will not be merged into the codebase. The game developers and/or Diamond Fam hold the keys to the kingdom. With the on-chain world of SEEDs you can do whatever you want with your SEEDs, which leverages the interoperability, compos-ability, and permission-less nature of Ethereum. Both have their strengths and their weaknesses. If we just offer one or the other the game is likely to be good, but not great. If we have both, however, then we can create a more dynamic ecosystem where the right tools are used for the right job. We don’t want to become men with hammers trying to fit everything into a box. The more freedom and permission-less inovation (both on and off-chain) the better.

So that being said, I see a few immediate reasons to earn, buy, and hodl SEEDs…

Earn

  • You love playing MetaGame so you play, and as a result you earn SEEDs.
  • You want financial rewards so you do work that the community has signaled is valuable and then you get rewarded.

Buy

  • You want to speculate on the future value of MetaGame and/or utility of SEEDs, so you buy and hodl.
  • You want to speculate on the future value of specific things within MetaGame, so you buy and boost.
  • You want to engage the MetaFam so you buy to put up bounties.
  • You want to engage in SEED governance (which should be minimized!) so you buy and vote.
  • You want to donate to the community so you buy and burn.
  • You want to use the cool dapps and DeFi apps that have emerged around the MetaGame ecosystem so you buy and use your SEEDs.
  • You want to get to Diamond Fam so you buy and boost all your own stuff until you’re king of the hill (good luck staying there lol)

Hodl

  • You earn and/or buy SEEDs, then want to speculate on the future value of MetaGame and/or utility of SEEDs so you hodl.
  • You want to put up some bounties and/or boost some things in the future, but due to market crashes SEEDs are on sale so you buy and hodl until you’re ready to bounty/boost.
  • You just play MetaGame and don’t know wtf is up with these SEED things or what Ethereum is so you don’t ever touch your SEEDs and they just sit in your wallet.
  • You put SEEDs into bounties, a commons pool DAO, or MetaFam DeFi dapps and they get locked up for a while until they get used. The most common scenario here is when you lock up SEEDs to get a derivative token (either a DAO token or a token minted on a bonding curve that uses SEEDs as collateral) and then until you’re done with that derivative token your SEEDs are locked up.
